Ogled at the Beach
Alexandria is a coastal city with miles and miles of beautiful...water. The beaches are not so great here, but they are better than no beach at all. The problem here is that the women are expected to go swimming fully clothed. No kidding. Headscarves and all. But there is an option for us foreigners or the more liberated Egyptians. There are a few private beaches, usually attached to a hotel, where for a hefty fee you can wear pretty much whatever you want.
One particular hotel that isn't too far away and is affordable is the Maritime Hotel. My friend Gavin and I decided to head there one afternoon to get some sun and go for a swim. I took off my long skirt and shirt to reveal a lime-green bikini. I pulled over a lounge chair and we ordered some lunch. Unfortunately, the "private" beach isn't so private afterall. You can still get a pretty clear shot from the Corniche.
I heard some whistles and cat-calls and there were a bunch of guys that had gathered around above the wall making noises at me. There is a guard that shoos people away and makes them move along, but this doesn't really deter them anyway. I was so pissed off that I put my clothes back on. A few minutes later 2 Egyptian girls came on to the beach in their bikinis, so I decided to get undressed again. The water was great. We went swimming and got a chance to cool off, but I haven't been back since. I thought back to my time in the French Riviera where women were topless and nobody gave them a second glance. *sigh*.
Bathing beauties.
