Innsbruck, Austria

On the way back to Germany, we stopped at Innsbruck, Austria, host of the 1964 & 1976 Winter Olympics.  we stopped just for the afternoon, had some pizza and ice cream and took a stroll through the Altstadt or Old Town.

The Goldenes Dachl or Golden Roof was built in 1500 and is adorned with 2657 fire-gilded copper tiles.  It was built for Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor by Archduke Friedrich IV.  It was to serve as a royal box where Maximilian could sit and enjoy tournaments in the square below.
The Inn River.  Innsbruck actually means "Bridge over the Inn."
