Beautiful day today in Berlin. So, I decided to go to the beautiful Museuminsel (Museum Island). It was a quaint area (another UNESCO World Heritage Site) with lots of boutiques, shops and outdoor cafes. I stopped at one and had some ice cream. Then I walked over to the island and strolled among some of the most beautiful museums of Europe. It was such a beautiful day that I dedided not to go inside any of them. I mean, why would I want to go to the Egyptian Museum when I freakin' lived in Egypt for a year?
Later that night someone at my hostel was going to take people on a pub crawl of Berlin's underground bars. I decided to check it out. There were about 15 of us in the group. I met 2 Finnish cousins named Eena and Oona (swear to God) a Japanese girl named Yuki, a Canadian girl, a gay Korean guy, three Aussie guys working in London, a British guy (that got really drunk) and....I don't remember who else.
We commenced our trip at 8pm. In Berlin you are allowed to drink on the street. There was nothing that I wanted more that night than to get a picture of me and a beer while riding the subway. We started at Mockernbruke station and went 5 stops...I'm not sure which direction.
I was hungry because I missed dinner and I ended up eating a falafel sandwich at some Turkish shawarma place that supposedly David Bowie and Iggy Pop had eaten at. I had enough falafel to last me a lifetime in Egypt but decided I had to go there!
We started off at some weird bar with a dingy basement with a guy with a turntable doing some kind of new-agey poetry. It was so bad it was good. Upstairs everything in the bar was upside down, glued to the ceiling...freaky. We also went to a gay bar that had pink fur everywhere. It was at this point that we lost our guide. Quite a few people from the group were falling-down drunk and had to go back to the hostel.
All that was left standing was me, the three Aussies and the Canadian chick. One of them REALLY wanted to go dancing so we ended up at some dance club called Matrix that a taxi driver took us to... until 7am! 11 hours after we began! I couldn't take anymore beer and dancing, so we finally got a cab home. No classic beer-on-the-subway shot for me. :( But I did get a blurry shot of an Asian pimp and his hos. :)
