The Adventure Begins - Day 4 Nebraska

Road Trip Day 4. Today we made our way out of Colorado and in to Nebraska. Topaz did not like the hotel we stayed in last night. It was like The Bates Motel from Psycho. He kept sniffing the same spot on the carpet. It was really creeping me out. I kept asking myself, "What is there? Was it a dead body? Some kind of gross bodily fluid?" Ewwww, I don't want to know. I just want the dog to stop sniffing that spot!

Surprisingly there is a lot to see and do in Nebraska. It's mostly "Americana" pioneery type stuff. On my way to Vegas I stopped at The First Pony Express Station. There was one place I tried to stop at on this trip called Pioneer Village, but I don't think dogs are allowed. So instead our first stop was The Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles in Lexington, Nebraska. There were two, nice, old guys running the place. They said, "Hey, come sign up for the military and we''ll get a commission on that." I said, "Oh yeah? Are you gonna split it with me?" Then I told them I actually already spent 8 years in the Army Reserves. We chatted about that for a little while and then I mentioned that I have a friend that is currently serving in Afghanistan. They offered me a little card and told me to write his name on it and then add it to the board they had set up complete with little yellow ribbons.
The museum was started by two Vietnam vets, and has about 100 vehicles including helicopters, tanks, halftracks, ambulances, and a jeep from every branch of the service plus displays of weapons, uniforms, engines, equipment, and more. The everyday necessities of a soldier's life, such as MREs, blend with unique vehicles like those used by the German army in World War II.

In the meantime Topaz discovered a new spot to sit in the car. He found he could sit on the big mound of blankets and suitcases I had in the back seat. He was loving it because he realized he could snooze but still see out the window.

Next, we stopped at The Great Platte River Road Archway. The main attraction of the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is the spectacular audiovisual presentation portraying the history of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Through a combination of historical documents, artifacts, murals, mock-ups, narration and audio-visual techniques it makes history come alive for the visitors that come through the doors.
Again, since I had the dog, I presumed we couldn't go in and it was too hot to leave him in the car so we took a picture by the big buffalo and were back on the road.
