The Adventure Begins - Day 1 Nevada to Utah

July 8, 2009. The journey that will take me to Italy, Egypt...and who knows where else...finally begins. I packed up my apartment here in Las Vegas and am on my way back to Cleveland, Ohio where I will say my good-byes to family and friends and prepare for this year- long journey. In August I will head to Washington D.C., Egypt...hopefully Italy for a few weeks...and then back to Egypt where I will be teaching at Alexandria University.

Road Trip Day 1. Got a late start. After deciding, "We don't need no stinking knee surgery," and heading to the chiropractor to have my back snapped into place, Topaz and I finally hit the road at about 2:30pm. We decided to take the quickest route from Las Vegas to Cleveland known as the Northern Route. That would take us from Nevada to Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and finally, Ohio. For those of you wondering who "Topaz" is...he is my little poodle mutt that I found wandering in Las Vegas. He is the best dog EVER!Zion National Park. By the time we reached Zion, it was already getting late. We (sorry I) decided to just make a quick stop at Kolob Canyons. The lighting was just right for some great pictures. Since it's just me and the dog, I had to find a creative way to get some pictures of us. I ended up balancing the camera on the side-view mirror (sometimes on the roof of the car) and setting the auto-timer. This picture came out pretty good - albeit crooked!

According to the Cedar City, Utah Tourism Bureau: The first inhabitants of the Kolob area were the Anasazi or "the ancient ones". Very little is known about the Anasazi or why they disappeared from the Southwest region about 1200 AD. The Paiutes were next to establish themselves in the area. The explorers Father Escalante and Father Dominguez first documented the Kolob Canyons as they tried to establish a trail from New Mexico to California. Mormon pioneers settled the Kolob area in 1852. They used the area for a variety of purposes, including cutting timber, raising livestock, and prospecting for minerals. According to Mormon scripture, the word "Kolob" means "the star nearest to the residence of God" .
I was finally ready to stop. I hadn't eaten all day and I was starving. I stopped at the first hotel I could find. I was afraid they wouldn't let the dog stay...so I stuffed him in his dog carrier and snuck him in the hotel. Luckily he is a good dog and he doesn't shed so there is no evidence for him to leave behind. In the morning, I snuck him out of the hotel to let him pee. I noticed a guy with a small poodle come out to let his dog pee as well. "Hmmm, sneaky." I thought. "I guess I'm not the only one." A few minutes later a woman came out with a big dog. Then a few minutes after that, a guy came out with three big dogs! What is going on? I went to check out and sure enough there was a sign reading, "We are a pet friendly hotel." All that work and sneaking around for nothing!
