The Nile TESoL Conference is held every year in Cairo. It was really good to see the other fellows and exchange stories about our assignments. I've purposely refrained from talking about my experiences here at the university because it has been a nightmare. I don't want to blog about it and possibly make things worse at this time.
Many of the fellows had never been to Cairo before, so I took this opportunity to take them around to the different sights. Some I've already seen, and some new ones I've been wanting to see.
The Sufi Dancers (Whirling Dervishes) perform at the Al-Ghouri Mausoleum a few times a week and admission is free. It's one of those must-see things to do in Cairo. Sufism is a branch of Islam. The act of whirling is a physically active meditation with the aim to reach the source of all perfection, or kemal. This is sought through abandoning one's naf's, egos, or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one's body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the solar system orbiting the sun.
