Splitting Split

Inside the old walls of Split
Everyone said we should go to Split.  It was on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia on our way up north. Especially to see Diocletian's Palace.  It was only a one hour drive from Makarska, so no big deal.

Actually, it was a big deal.  Traffic was horrible and it took an extra hour to get into the city.  We found a parking area, but I could't figure out how to get in it.  Some guy that seemed to work there tried to help us. His English wasn't good, so he asked if he could get in our car to show us where to drive to.

He directed us down the street and to the right.  We got a ticket and entered the lot where the guy was yelling at some dudes working there; dudes we thought were his colleagues - we thought.

We pull into a parking space and he gets out and says, "2, no 4 euro."  I looked at him like ???  And I suddenly realized that he doesn't work there at all and was trying to charge us for his help.  Ok, fair enough, he did help us figure out the parking. I pulled out 10 kuna, which isn't even 2 euro.  "NO!  No kuna!  Euro."

"He's crazy!" I told Mary.  "CRAZY CRAZY" he yelled back.  I said, "Ok, no problem, let's call the police." " No, no police!" he yelled back and walked away with nothing.  Mary was afraid he'd come back and do something to the car and steal our stuff or something.  So I suggested we just move the car to a different space.  No problem.

The palace was built by Roman Emperor Diocletian on May 1, 305AD.  I guess it was also used for Game of Thrones season 4.  Ooooh, I'll have to go back and watch it all again!
After the palace was abandoned by the Romans,  the local people moved in and built shops.  It offered them protection for the invading Slavs.

High school girls flirting with the Romans.

It would have been great to wander around some more, but it was so crowded with tourists from cruise ships that I couldn't stand it for more than an hour.  We went back to the car and split Split!
There was a small train station at the parking lot for transporting car to..??? who knows where.
